Latest UK Study Visa Norms 2025
What Indian Students Must Know
(with LegitMoves – Your End-to-End Study Abroad Partner)
The UK continues to be one of the most loved destinations for Indian students aiming for world-class education and global career opportunities. However, with immigration rules evolving frequently, it’s natural to feel uncertain about your future plans. At LegitMoves, we understand these concerns and are here to simplify the process for you.
Key Updates to UK Study Visa Norms (2025)
1. Graduate Route (Post-Study Work Visa) – 2 Years Still in Place
- Currently, Indian students completing an eligible bachelor’s or master’s degree in the UK can stay back for up to 2 years to work or look for work.
- PhD and doctoral graduates get a longer 3-year stay.
- While there were proposals to reduce this to 18 months, the UK government has confirmed that, as of now, the 2-year Graduate Route remains valid.
- This is excellent news for Indian students who want real global work exposure after graduation.
2. Dependent Visa Restrictions
- Only students enrolled in postgraduate research programmes (like PhDs) can bring dependents to the UK.
- For most other courses, dependents are no longer allowed, as per the 2024–25 immigration reforms.
3. Financial Proof Requirements
- You must show proof of sufficient funds to cover tuition fees + at least 9 months of living expenses.
- Outside London: ~£1,023 per month
- In London: ~£1,334 per month
- Many students now prefer showing fixed deposits or bank statements for a smoother application process.
4. English Proficiency Requirements
- Most UK universities accept IELTS/TOEFL/PTE.
- Some institutions even allow MOI (Medium of Instruction) certificates from your previous institution, reducing your need to take an English test.
5. Speed of Visa Processing
- Student visas usually take 3–6 weeks from the date of biometrics.
- Priority services are available for faster decisions (within 5 working days).
What This Means for Indian Students
The UK still offers one of the most generous post-study work opportunities compared to other destinations. The 2-year Graduate Route gives you the breathing space to find jobs, build experience, or even transition to a long-term Skilled Worker visa.
However, since policies may evolve, it’s wise to start your application early and plan ahead.
